About the Course
This course aims to equip participants with the introductory knowledge and skills to effectively implement the IMO Biofouling Guidelines and related international standards. By raising awareness and fostering best practices in biofouling management, the course seeks to mitigate the transboundary spread of invasive aquatic species (IAS) and reduce greenhouse gas emissions associated with global shipping. The content provides a comprehensive introduction to multiple aspects related to ships’ biofouling including its role as a vector for the introduction of invasive aquatic species, economic and environmental impacts, international and national policy, and the management solutions and technologies currently available.
The course is offered free of charge and is available in English and Spanish. It is self-paced, requiring no prerequisites for enrollment. Participants can start, pause, resume, or replay the course at any time. Upon successful completion, a certificate of completion can be downloaded and printed.
The course is designed to take 12 hours to complete.
